Joshua Tree National Park | Camping, Climbing, Caving
Over Labor Day weekend, I went with a group of friends to Joshua Tree National Park. Yes, in the DEAD OF SUMMER BAKING AT 108 DEGREES. I had never been before, so despite it being record heat over the weekend, I just HAD to jump at the opportunity to go. Aside from insane temperatures, it was beautiful there. The rock formations are incredible and scrambling up them is quite fun. It's clear why Joshua Tree is a rock climbing and bouldering haven.
I left my trusty Lowa hiking boots at home thinking, I'd just laze around all weekend eating because of the crazy triple digit temps. This was a stupid mistake on my end, but it didn't stop me from attempting to do a little rock scrambling in my silly slip ons. (I did end up twisting my ankle a bit, UGH.)
We drove from the campgrounds into the actual park and did a bit of exploring at the Chasm of Doom. It's technically a cave system, but getting to the top was a combination of a little scrambling, a little climbing and a little bit of caving (probably more spelunking because I was so under-prepared, ha.)
Again, not having the right shoes was a terrible mistake, but luckily I had my yoga-grip toe socks and climbed the majority of it with those on with zero problems.
Seems to be a tradition for some to take on the Chasm on a full moon with no head lamps, though.
How are people even this beautiful?!?!?! 😍
It was a wild ride and I'd go in a heartbeat once the weather drops just a little bit! I would do it again with those socks and maybe gloves for palm protection. Perhaps the next full moon?
